What to do after a fire

Do not go back in until the fire department says it is safe. Fires restart in wall cavities. That is why crews cut holes you did not ask for.

• Let firefighters decide if water, electric, and gas stay off. Do not turn them back on yourself.
• Call your insurer. Ask how they want contents inventoried and who they want for cleanup.
• Red Cross or local disaster relief can help with a bed and prescriptions the first night.
• Tell the landlord or mortgage company.
• If you leave, tell the police the building will be vacant.
• Keep receipts for every dollar you spend because of the fire.
